Windows 7 - installation blues

1 Windows 7 - installation blues on Sat Oct 24, 2009 6:15 am

Well it arrived Thursday, despite the postal strike, and I decided to get it installed last night. I had a few probs doing back ups, had to download a previously untried programme to back up Firefox and hopefully my emails.
Then I got to installing Windows 7, I went for full install rather than upgrade, and it did tell me it would put old windows files in a directory called Windows Old, what I didn't think that meant was it would put all my programmes and all my files in there so none of them work unless moved and some still won't work and need to be reinstalled!

As it happened it took hours to install, I was so late going to bed it was hardly worth bothering! Now when I tried to get firefox and Thunderbird up and going even with the restore there were no emails or bookmarks, but then I tried moving them all and the backup program (the back ups took a bit of finding as they were in the "old" folder too), and I ran it again and to my relief I have my emails and bookmarks etc!

So onto Kapersky internet protection, moved it but it wouldn't start, so found the download and reran the installation and got a message that a file wouldn't be installed as it was incompatible but it carried on. On the Kapersky site I noticed then that only the 2010 version is compatable, great I thought. Luckily I noticed a little box saying that if you have a licence you can download the latest version and it will run for the duration of the licence! So I am doing that.

Oh boy this could be a long long day, and I still need to do my DTcard!

Oh no! Don't you realise how many things you rely on when things like this go wrong!

I was lucky as I got a new laptop just as Vista came out and so it was already to go without me having to do anything (and my old PC didn't have anything that needed transferring over).

Hope you get it all fixed and that Windows 7 is so good that you forget all of this hassle! You'll have to let us know (it looks good on the sites I've seen!).

Hi Ellie, I decided to get it because is it supposed to be so much better than Vista, and because it was about £65 before it was released!

I am sure it will be alright once I get everything sorted, I have the Zoombrowser program back and working but before I download from the memory card I am copying all the photos back so it doesn't get confused (hopefully). Then I need my scanner drivers, and to work out all the other things that need to be working!

Well done Cazzy, a fresh windows install can take ages to get going but I am glad you are having successes along the way. I hope it all comes together for you soon.
I think i will go to my parents for the weekend when my DH decides to do it as he gets soo stressed by things like that! You would be able to hear the yells of frustration etc from Australia! However, Windows 7 is supposed to be loads better, slicker, faster and not as memory hungry. You must let us know if you notice any improvement. We are expecting the upgrade to arrive in the post any day now (well if it hasn't got lost in the strikes!).

I was surprised when mine arrived on Thursday as I knew it was released Wednesday so thought it would get stuck! I realised I have lost i-player and I missed Merlin so I will have to install that, I couldn't scan my till receipts for TNS yesterday as I haven't installed the scanner drivers.

I am dreading trying to get Robo going, though I think that was the only folder that Windows didn't move to the "Old" folder so it might still be working.

I have noticed the PC goes into sleep mode very quickly so if I leave it and do some crafting or look for something when I get back I have to wake it up again, which is a tad annoying though I am sure environmentally friendly. It has frozen a couple of times on me, but there are updates being downloaded every day at the moment so there must be a lot of tweaking going on.
