Some b*** is using my credit card!

I just had the card provider ring, they have used it for under £2 to Itunes and over £350 to a sports shop so the card is stopped, I am usually very careful, not sure how anyone got it. Couldn't have been that posh hat shop?

OMG Cazzy that is terrible - so pleased you have got your card stopped. You jus cannot trust anyone these day. I had a phishing email pretending to be paypal and wanting my details - I forwarded the email on to paypal and they confirmed it was not them.

I went in Waitrose twice, M&S to get a refund, Whittards to buy a mug, a health shop and the hat shop, could have been any of them, the money was spent first yesterday evening probably before I got home!

Oh Cazzy. It's lucky they caught it before they ran up thousands. Doesn't make you feel any better though does it?! I don't suppose they'll be able to trace them either will they?

I don't know if they can do anything. They didn't ask me any questions about who might have done it, and they said I wasn't liable thankfully. They called from India I guess on my mobile. Had me down with my old job details, haven't worked for the Health Authority for over 10 years now, so that is updated.

You have checked that someone has used your card and that the phone call wasn't the scam Cazzy?!

They didn't ask for my card number or pin Fe, sounded genuine to me, knew my details and quoted some getting me to fill in the others, and only they would know where I worked 10 years ago, not the scammers I feel. So as my card was stopped before the call I do think it was genuine unfortunately. Or fortunately, as they have stopped it before it gets serious.

I would phone your card provider to make sure it was them that contacted you. Someone could have got some details from profiles on the web it pays to be careful and ask.
We had a phone call about a transaction that our card provider was unsure about but they gave all the details to us. This was ages ago, we had used the card for that transaction.

There are so many blooming scams these days it's hard to keep up with them all.

I just remember getting an email a while ago about people who had been scammed by "the bank" phoning to ask about transactions they thought were fraudulent, getting all the card details while on the phone and then using those details to buy stuff on that card there and then. However if you didn't give them your card details and the card had already been stopped then it sounds like it was a genuine call Cazzy. The world's gone mad hasn't it!

I think I am really careful too, so it is more annoying than if I wasn't. My pin was a bit too easy though.

Oh Cazzy thats a nusiance for you. You've got to be so careful these days. I'd check with the card provider too. I get emails all the time pretending to be from a bank wanting details but if you hoover with the cursor over the link at the bottom of your screen it shows a different addy & its not from a bank!

I get those too, can usually tell by the email address not looking quite right or not actually having an account with that bank, but they are getting really good. The only other thing is I ordered my supplements on the phone and they have my card details so I only give them the verification number.

I buy loads online but it would seem likely this happened in Bath after my shopping spree which was between 3:30 and 5:30 yesterday afternoon, and it must have been one of the shops I was in someone working there must have cloned the card as I can't see how else, I keep my receipts unless I have had one taken subtly.

the same thing happened with my debit card! i tried to get money out but i had to go to reception to sort it out as it wouldnt let me and they said that itunes had tried to take £1 out but alliance and leicester had stopped the card as it looked dodgy!
I'd paid for my Etsy bill and thats when itunes tried it on! they go for a £1 to start off with and if the card provider doesnt see it as dodgy they hit your account hard!

It so makes my blood boil............... why do we have dishonest people who prey on us inocents? I've heard of several incidents of a similar nature, one stemmed from a garage where the person regularly went for petrol, they bought a ticket for a holiday and got caught but I expect they would only have had a pat on the back and a don't be naughty again!!!!! As Fe says, the world has gone mad!!!!

It is crazy. All the time I worked in London nothing happened, and in Bath which feels really safe I have had a mobile phone stolen a few years ago from a wrist strap on my wrist, and now this.

It is a sad thing when you have to watch everything you do. We don't have credit cards or debit cards now as we have such a low income( Income Support and DLA) we cannot have either. Everything is cash or postal orders. We did have them ages ago when we were able to work and even then we had to be really careful as we got calls about transactions that we had not made. So I dread to think what it is like now that was about 6 years ago.
It is so sad that you have to watch everything you do today just in case someone is ripping you off or trying to steal from you.

Our friend from America came over in 2002 and she was so surprised when I told her to watch her bag and to keep it close to her when we were out. She is so trusting and came from an area were they would leave their garage open all day and think nothing of it. She thought England would be the same sadly it is not, leave a garage open around here and it would be empty when you got back.

I hope they get the people who have done this to you Cazzy and give them more than a slap on the wrist.

Have you rung your card provider to double check Cazzy? I'm only asking because it sounds very similar to something that happened to a friend of mine....they knew all her details, job etc and only needed her to fill in one blank...but because they knew these details and asked her for little snippets of information she thought it was genuine. It was only because her husband happened to be in the room and just had a feeling that something wasn't quite right. He hung the phone up and they rang her provider straight away who confirmed it was a scam...so please if you haven't already done so, ring them and double check.

Thanks for that, I will check. I was thinking I could check online but I don't usually look at that one online so will have to find my passwords. I have emailed them, none of the transactions are showing on my account, but they happened after the last one shown.

They did have my employers name from 11 years ago not my current job, they would have had that when I applied for the card so that is why I think it is likely to be genuine, they did ring my mobile not landline but they had the land line number, last time they rang the land line.

O.K. I phoned and checked and it was indeed a genuine call from them. So no phone scam just card cloning!

Just read this Cazzy, that is terrible. These scams take place everywhere, usually some one has interfered with the card reader. I try to get my cash from ATM's inside a bank, as for shops, it is really down to the shop owners to be very alert and to look for any suspicious activity. Sadly the banks don't do much to stop it, a friend of mine had her account cleared out, she knew where the fraud had taken place and told her bank, but they couldn't have cared less, they just reimbursed her.

That is awful, they should try and stop it. I hardly ever use ATMs, if I do it is the one inside the shopping precinct. I think it must have been a student or young person, there are a lot of those in Bath. Could have been somewhere else I guess.

It could have been anyone Cazzy, I've been watching the morning Crimewatch show, they showed a credit card thief doctoring a card machine in a shop. He was caught on CCTV, sadly the shop didn't check the tapes for a week! I never use my debit card at a petrol station, they are the worst places for card scamming.

We had a local one that was doing that, I tend to use Tesco for Petrol.
